Here is a list of what to take.

Luggage bag with wheels
A large backpack or suitcase on wheels. Why wheels? We have to "carry" our luggage for some distance. We get off the CountryLink train at Central Station, then get another train to Wynyard Station and then walk about 700 metres to the Youth Hostel.

Lunch for Sunday
Lunch and snacks (chewing gum is NOT OK!) for the train trip on Sunday. A water bottle (water is best because if it spills it does not create a sticky mess and soil clothing).
